How to Avoid Protein Overload

Village Hair Salon In Calgary

Hair needs to maintain a balance between protein and moisture. A protein overload will block the hair from absorbing moisture, which creates hair that is dry, brittle, lifeless, doesn’t hold style, breaks, and sheds!

Can it be fixed?
Yes! First things first, put aside (for now!) all your hair products that contain protein, below is a list of proteins in hair products! For now, you want to use a clarifying shampoo to rid your hair of all excess protein and continue with a gentle clarifying shampoo 1 or 2 times a week. Additionally, try trimming off an inch or two of split ends. Protein may have been building up in the very ends of your hair for some time, and those split ends will not fuse back together.

How do I avoid protein overload?
Make sure you’re following the package instructions for any hair treatments. Don’t layer two products with protein (especially keratin) on top of each other, and don’t use the products more than recommended.

Common Protein Ingredients
Soy protein, Silk protein, Keratin, Biotin, Hydrolyzed collagen, Hydrolyzed wheat protein, Hydrolyzed rice protein
